How to Choose a Consultant
Once you have decided that your particular situation may be helped through the services of a consultant, what do you look for in that company or person?:
- Track Record: what is the specific background of the consultant and the firm that most specifically relates to your project?
- References: what do previous clients say?
- Compatibility: with individual personalities of the lead consultant who would be assigned to your project and your own volunteers and staff, and belief in your mission
- Confidence: that the individuals demonstrate in assessing your needs and accomplishing your goals
Suggestions for the hiring process:
- After an initial phone call to establish a mutual interest in the consultant's skills to address your needs, ask the consultant to meet with you to review details
- Ask for a detailed, written proposal of services
- Choose a selection committee from your organization
- Invite consultants to present their proposals to the selection committee
- Check references of potential consultants
- Upon final decision, engage the consultant with a signed contract
